Plastic Injection Molding: The Process

As we covered previously, plastic injection molding has a definite process.

A plastic injection molding tool or machine consists of a hopper through which molding material is introduced. The machine has heating barrels that are equipped with reciprocating screws which feed molten plastic into a split mold through runner channels and gates. The screw adds heat and melts the polymers through its shearing action before they are injected into the mold tool. This is a crafted tool where the desired product will be formed on cooling. The tool is designed with non-stick material that allows quick removal of cooled parts thus increasing production of many components. The molding tool may produce a single consistent part using repeated procedures. It can also use multiple impressions to produce many components of the same product.

Machine size relevance – Injection molders come in different sizes, surface areas, hydraulic pressure and toggle clamping. The combination of these elements constitutes what is known as locking force which can be thousands of tons. Large machines that spread over a large surface area provide more locking force and are thus better in large scale production since they can easily counter injection pressure. Computer control in injection molding The advances of computer technology have been applied in the control and operation of injection molding machines. They incorporate sensors that feed information to a computer program to initiate different processes and basically control the actions of injection machines. The use of computer controlled tools triggered by sensor fed information ensures shot-to-shot quality and production of consistent outputs. Impression making can also be computerized and molders use software programs to design unique impressions and components. This however is part of computer aided designs.

How to Find a Plastic Injection Molding Service

There are fewer companies that offer injection molding when compared to other service providers. The best way to contract an expert molder is through official website of relevant companies who operate in existing plastic industries. Direct communication with these companies should be a priority before anything else.

There are sites that also refer or link to official molding companies. Most of these sites also offer a review of each company to help clients in choosing the best molder.

Conclusion Plastic injection molding is used in day-to-day manufacturing of several different parts and components. This technique is used in production of both small and large wholesale parts. What’s more, the process can be computer controlled to increase efficiency and consistency of outcome. For these reasons, plastic injection molding is a very popular manufacturing technique in the plastic industry.

All About Injection Molding and Plastic

Plastic injection molding is the commonest of all plastic part manufacturing. It involves the use of high precision machines and tools which design desired components using a variety of thermoplastics and thermosetting polymers. Other forms of injection molding involve the use of elastomers, glasses and confections among other materials.
In plastic injection, there are specific polymers used and the most common ones include the following:

  • Polypropylene PP
  • Nylon PA
  • Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene ABS
  • Polystyrene GPRS
  • Polycarbonate PC
This type of injection is used in the manufacturing industry to produce numerous components or whole parts starting from simple home equipment and packaging materials. The technique is also used in manufacturing complete parts of automotive and advanced tools. Examples of plastic injection molding products As we mentioned before, injection molding is responsible for tens of thousands of products that range from small components to complex tools and parts.

What Sort of Plastic Parts Can You Make?

What sort of parts can be made out of plastic?  Most food packaging containers, pesticide nozzles, bottles and tops are made from this type of molding. Car parts like bumpers and dashboards covers are also molded in the same way. Virtually all manufacturing include some form of injection molding. As a matter of fact, all manufacturing practices feature injection molding parts and processes. Some of the products that are made using this process include but are not limited to:
  • Electrical switches
  • Dashboard houses and wheel bins for automotive
  • Power-tool housing
  • Drug inhaler units
  • DVDs and telephone handset
  • Battery casings, crates, recycling boxes and disposable razors
  • And even more
In fact, the list of existing and possible products of plastic injection molding is simply inexhaustible. The process of injection is quite easy to understand especially since it consists of only a few phases. The process synopsis basically involves heating the polymers and maintaining them at flowing temperatures and high pressure. It also includes injecting the plastic into molding parts where it cools under high pressure into the desired component. We will cover this more about this process in a future article.
For now, know that this process allows you to create any number of custom plastic parts for whichever purpose you need them for. Ultimately, plastic injection molding is one of the best aids to manufacturing to come along in the past few years.

Plastic Injection Molding in Phoenix: The Process and How It Evolves

Plastic injection molding is a manufacturing process that started to really take off in the post-war years.

What is Plastic Injection Molding?

What is plastic injection molding? Plastic injection molding is where liquid plastic is directed into a mold that makes custom made plastic parts.  Examples of parts made with a molding process include: plaques, signs, custom name plates, and more.

All injection molding is comprised of three main elements: the mold, the clamping unit, and the injection unit.  The mold is a machined part that can make custom plastic parts in whatever size and shape are required.  The clamping unit is what holds the two halves of the mold together.  To deliver the molten plastic, that's where the injection unit comes in.  The amount of plastic that is delivered depends on the mold that is being used.  In some cases the molding process is computer controlled
