Plastic injection molding is one of the most widely used processes in manufacturing. Since plastic is a material that, when heated to the proper temperature, becomes molten, that means it can be shaped into a wide range of parts.

Custom Plastic Parts: The Final Steps of the Manufacturing Process
Stage 4:
Ejection
After enough
time has passed, the custom plastic part that has cooled may be removed from the mold through
the ejection system, which is affixed to the back of the mold. When the mold
has been opened, it is then pushed out by a mechanism. In order to eject the
part, force must be applied--this is because the cooling process causes the
part to shrink and adhere to the mold. A release agent may be sprayed on to the
mold cavity surfaces before the material is actually injected, so as to make
the ejection process easier. The dry cycle time of the machine can be used to
estimate the time required to open the mold and eject the part; this estimate
needs to include the time it took for the part to be pulled free from the mold.
Once the part has been ejected, the mold may now be clamped shut for the next
shot.
Stage 5: Post
Processing
As with any
other cycle, some post processing is usually required--a time used to take care
of odds and ends. During the cooling phase, there will be solidified pieces
left inside the mold. This excess material needs to be trimmed from the part;as we covered previously this can be achieved by using cutters. For certain types of material, like
thermoplastics, scrap material that comes from this trimming may be recycled.
The pieces are placed into a plastic grinder, also referred to as granulators
or regrind machines, which will regrind the scrap into pellets. The integrity
of the properties of these material may be compromised, so the regrind needs to
be mixed with raw material in the proper ratio to be reused in the plastic injection molding
process.
Injection Molding and Final Thoughts
Sometimes, only a handful of parts are needed. Other times, hundreds or even thousands of parts are called for. As a result, when you're looking for a company that does plastic injection molding in Chandler, make sure that you find one that can not only make you the part to your specifications, but one that can make you the amount that you need.
